Stoutmen High School and Middle School Match Reports

In a beautiful evening for rugby, the Stoutmen HS team and the JR Stoutmen MS rugby teams took the field against the Appleton Dragons.

The JR Stoutmen started off the night in what would be the first contact rugby any of the kids have ever played.  Being short handed, the JR's borrowed a couple players from the Dragons to make this scrimmage happen.  In a back and forth match, The JR's lost 2 tries to 5.  The tries were scored by Jesse Dietenberger and Bryton Rodriguez.  All around solid play from Wyatt Olig, Garrett Getz, an Bill Schultz helped to contribute to a successful first scrimmage for the JR Stoutmen.  They will be in action again next weekend when they travel to Green Bay for the first tournament of the year.

The Stoutmen followed up with a solid performance of their own, blanking their counterparts 75-0.  In a solid team effort, tries were scored early and often as Jonah Dietenberger put the ball down on a hard crash play at the 5 minute mark.  Shortly after at the 8 minute mark, the Dragons failed to find touch on a kick after being backed up inside their own 22 meter line.  The kick was returned 35 meters by Cody Mueller for his first try of the year to put the Stoutmen up 10-0.  The Stoutmen put down their 3rd try of the game at the 15 minute mark on another crash play by prop Dakota Goldapske.  Cameron Britton converted his first kick of the game to put them up 17-0.  The next 24 points were scored by Britton on 2 well executed back line plays the latter of which was on a 60 meter breakthrough run for the score.  He also converted both kicks to put the score at 31-0.  Dietenberger again scored at the 28 minute mark on a weak side 8 man pick play from 10 meters out.  The conversion was missed and the score was 36-0.  The relentless pressure from the Stoutmen defense forces yet another turn over right before the halftime whistle and Dietenberger puts down his third try of the game in a loose pick and run from 50 meters out.  The conversion was made to put the half time score at 43-0.  The scoring continued early in the second half as the younger Britton, Tucker, got into the scoring act and put down 2 tries of his own to put the score at 53-0.  Not to be out done by his younger sibling, C. Britton put down 2 more at the 40 and 45 minute marks, with the 2nd coming on a perfect offload from Justin Mock.  The final 2 scores of the game came from Stephen Speidel to put the score well out of reach at 75-0.  The Stoutmen defense was only tested a handful of times throughout the game, but held strong in the final minutes of the game to reject a strong push from the Dragons who got inside the 5 meter line.  That solid goal line stand helped preserve the first shutout of the young season.  Stoutmen 75- Dragons 0.  The combination of the good rucking and hard crashes by the forwards helped the Stoutmen keep control of the match from the get go. The man of the match award goes out to Kanen Getz.  His outstanding support all match allowed the Stoutmen to control nearly every breakdown he was involved in.  His ball control and excellent decision making also helped keep control of the ball most of the game.

Next match Friday April 26 against Depere at the rugby fields at UWFDL.
